I
would like to welcome you and your child to 5th and 6th grade
Religion. I want you to know that I am truly committed to making your
child’s Religion class both educational as well as exciting.
My main commitment to you and your child this year is to help
your child begin to develop their own personal relationship with God
or to continue to nourish and strengthen the relationship that may
already exist.
Of course I encourage you to be an example to your child and
discuss the ways God plays a role in your life.
Our
Religion series focuses on the Sacraments for 5th Grade and the
history of our salvation in 6th Grade.
In both classes we will have writing exercises, Bible study, as
well as meditation exercises.
As you are aware your child does not have a take home textbook.
Be assured that a Study Guide will be distributed to the
students 4-5 days prior to the test and all the information needed to
be prepared for the test will be on that Study Guide. I
would like to familiarize you with some of my classroom policies: HOMEWORK: The
5th
and 6th
grade students will have minimal written homework assignments for
Religion.
However, this does not mean they do not have homework.
The student’s daily homework is to review any vocabulary or
study guide questions we have answered in class.
This should be done nightly.
If this review is done daily, studying for the test will be
lessened.
The 5th
grade will have weekly DARE assignments that will be counted for a
homework grade.
In both grades we will have several in class assignments; any
assignment not finished in class is to be taken home and finished for
homework. TESTS:
I
will give a vocabulary quiz and chapter test for each chapter that is
covered in class.
The students will complete a study guide for each chapter and
we will review 1-2 days prior to the test being given.
All class assignments, important class information, project
outlines and test dates will be available to you and your child on
SCHOOLNOTES.COM.
If your child receives a “C” or below, the test must be
signed and returned within 2 days; for every day the test is not
signed and returned the student will be issued an infraction.
This is to keep you aware of your child’s progress. I will
keep all of the student’s tests in their yellow folder. The chapter
tests are used for the students study guide for their 9- week exam.
The students will be encouraged to use both their study guides
and their tests to prepare for the Exam. Periodically, the yellow test
folder will be sent home for parents to review.
If at anytime you would like to review your child’s test
grades, please send me a note and I will have your child bring their
folder home with them.
Again, I just ask that it be returned in a timely manner.
HOMILY
WRITINGS: At
least once every two weeks, all of the 5th and 6th grade students will
be attending Mass on Wednesdays.
In class that day each student will be asked to write a 1-2
sentence summary of what the main idea of the priest’s homily was.
This bi-weekly assignment will be worth 10 points and is used
to assure the students understanding of the priest’s message at
mass.
At the end of the 9 weeks, the homily writings will be averaged
together and counted as a test grade. PROJECTS/
REPORTS: Each
5th and 6th Grader will complete 1 report or project this year.
I feel as if I have designed these projects so that 90% of the
work will be completed in class.
I am sure that you may have heard that in the past, however if
your child utilizes the time that is dedicated in class to work on the
project/report, your involvement will be little and really that is
what I ask.
I want the students to learn to express their ideas and
information for themselves.
As a parent myself, I know that sometimes that can be
difficult; but trust me they can do it.
Be assured that with each project/report a parent information
letter will be sent to you 3-4 weeks before to outline all the
requirements for their work.
These projects/reports are not designed to add stress to your
child or to you.
These reports are a way in which children can express
themselves creatively while applying the research, writing and
speaking skills they are learning in Language Arts. D.A.R.E
(5th
grade only): The
5th grade students have already begun the D.A.R.E. program.
D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Awareness Resistance Education.
Dy. Bud Cason of the Tangipohoa Sheriffs Office teaches the
class.
In early February all students will participate in the D.A.R.E.
graduation and those students who have successfully completed all of
the requirements for D.A.R.E. will receive a diploma.
One of the main lessons that is weaved through the entire
D.A.R.E. program and in the class lessons is responsibility.
The students will be responsible to complete certain D.A.R.E.
assignments in order to graduate; these assignments must be turned in
on their due date.
Only in the event of a student’s illness will work be
accepted late.
Students who do not turn in their assignments on the day that
they are due will not be able to graduate from theD.A.R.E. program.
All students, whether they graduate or not, will participate in
the D.A.R.E graduation.
D.A.R.E.
will be discussed further during “Back to School Night”.
EXTRA-CREDIT: I do not give extra credit assignments. I truly believe that it is partly my responsibility to instill in the children that they have to carry the responsibility to complete their work when it is due. All I want is for the students to do their very best on all assignments and tests that are given. Again
it is not only my pleasure it is my honor to be teaching your children
this year.
They all exhibit the teachings of Christ when they are in my
class.
The values that you have instilled in your children are shown
to me on a
daily basis.
I encourage you to contact me at any time if you should have
any comments, questions or concerns about your child.
I will make every effort to make this an exciting year filled
with Christ.
