SOCIAL STUDIES 5/6TH GRADES: WHAT TO EXPECT THIS YEAR: 1. Maps – Landforms, landmarks, places, etc… that pertain to either American (5th) or World History (6th) will be studied. The maps/lists should be kept in the designated pocket protector in the binder. 2. History – In 5th grade, we study American History. In 6th grade, we study World History. We will have chapter tests or other assignments that cover information from our texts and other sources. We will use two books, Harcourt Brace and Scott Foresman. The students will be notified when to use which book. I will also cover other areas of Social Studies; such as: Economics, Government, and Geography 3. Homework – Homework may be assigned throughout the year. This can be, but not limited to: worksheets, thinking maps, vocabulary, study guide questions. When homework is assigned, it is very important for the student to complete it. The homework I assign will generally be seen on tests/quizzes. 4.
Students will be assigned vocabulary
from the chapters. The vocabulary is generally from the chapter we are
studying, but can also contain geography terms found in the atlas of
the textbook. The lists will come from the teacher. Students are to
complete vocabulary, unless instructed otherwise. It
is very important that the students study the vocabulary we learn in
class, as it will be seen on quizzes,
tests, activities, etc… 5. I use Quia to help parents and students know what will be happening during the upcoming week. The most important thing for students to remember is that the homework on the board is the homework to go by. If we don’t get to something in class, or if I feel students are not ready for a test, I will post the changes on the board and will try to update Quia as soon as possible. 6. Tests will be sent home after I have received about 2 or 3 grades (from a test, quiz, etc…). The test packet must be sent back to school by the due date, signed by a parent or guardian, because it is considered a homework assignment. I post test grades as soon as I can, and normally the students get to see their graded tests a day or 2 after the test. 7. Projects – may be assigned throughout the year. These can really help a student’s grade if completed correctly and on time. I hope I have covered all of your questions or concerns. I will go over these procedures again on Back-To-School Night. If you need to contact me, please e-mail me through Quia, or call the school office. Thank You, Kimberly Inman
