2nd Grade Syllabus/Class Requirements

Welcome to 2nd Grade! I have developed a discipline plan which will guide your child to make good decisions about his/her behavior and give him/her the opportunity to learn in a positive classroom environment. The plan below outlines the classroom rules, rewards, as well as the corrective actions for appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Working together, you and I can create a rewarding learning experience for your child.

Classroom Rules:

1. Listen carefully.
2. Follow directions.
3. Work quietly. Do not disturb others who are working.
4. Respect others. Be kind with your words and actions.
5. Respect school and personal property.
6. Work and play safely.

If You Choose to Break a Rule:

First Time: Name written on discipline tablet. (Warning)
Second Time: Rainbow Card flipped to Green. Lose 5 minutes of recess.
Third Time: Card flipped from Green to Yellow. Lose entire recess or special activity.

Fourth Time: Card flipped from Yellow to Red. Parents will be contacted by note/phone.
Fifth Time: Card removed from the Rainbow Connection Chart. An official behavior
notice/CAP form will be sent home.
Severe misbehavior: Student will be sent directly to the office. Student will receive an F for the
week.

Green = 1 flip Yellow = 2 flips Red = 3 flips Card Removal = 4 flips

Conduct Grade: 0-3 (A) 4-6 (B) 7-9 ( C ) 10-12 (D) 13 + (F)

Consequences: Loss of recess/special activities may result in one of the meaningful consequences listed in the student handbook.

Cards are put back to rainbow each afternoon. A weekly conduct grade will be given based on
the number of flips received by the end of the week.

Rewards:

Satisfaction of a job well done
Pleasant and inviting classroom environment
Praise (daily)
Free time or special privileges
A variety of positive activities/treats (throughout the school year)
Caught Being Positive

Welcome to Sensational Second Grade!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me by note or through the school office (985) 345-0977. I look forward to working with your child and together we can make this a pleasant and successful year.

Thanks for your cooperation,

1) Arrivals/Dismissals

School begins at 7:35 a.m. in the gym and ends at 2:30 p.m. Students should not arrive at school any earlier than 7:05 a.m.

Breakfast: 7:00-7:30 a.m. (held in the cafeteria)
After care: 2:30 - 6:00 p.m.

2) Newsletter (The Scoop on Second Grade)

Generally, parent newsletters will be sent home on Mondays in the homework folder. It will include upcoming events, classroom information, and test/project schedules for the week.

3) Discipline Plan

The discipline plan I use with my students is called Rainbow Connection. It is a color coded discipline plan that uses both rewards and consequences. It is also used to help monitor a student's overall behavior throughout the year.

4) Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned. All homework is due the NEXT SCHOOL DAY unless otherwise specified. If a student fails to complete/turn in a homework assignment, you will be notified with a missed homework sheet. Incomplete/missed homework assignments will be made up with the following day's homework assignment. No reward points will be earned for missed/incomplete homework assignments.

Students who complete their homework will have it recorded on a chart. Students can earn reward points throughout the year for responsibly completing their homework. Occasionally, homework contests will be held.

5) Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences will be set up as needed and as directed by office policy. If you need to set up a conference at any other time of the year, please contact the office (985) 345-0977 for an appointment.

6) Lunch

All students are expected to participate in the lunch program. Your child will be issued an account number for a prepaid debit account. Information from the cafeteria regarding the lunch program will be sent home on the first day of school.

7) Weekly Schedule

This will be the schedule our class generally follows for the school year; however, it is subject to change throughout the school year because of other school-wide activities or days the students attend Mass.

8) Test Folders/Correspondence

Test folders will be sent home on Wednesdays and must be returned by Friday of the same week. Please sign test papers before returning the folder. This is my way of knowing that you reviewed your child's graded work for the week.

All money, checks etc. should come in an envelope labeled with the following information: name, date, grade, amount, purpose. This ensures that payment for items/services will get to the right recipient.
LABEL EVERYTHING: anything brought to school, and all clothes, including shoes

9) Other Information

Book Orders: About once a month book order forms will be sent home for children's books.

Emergency: In case of school closings due to weather or other sudden emergency - listen to your local radio or television station. Parent broadcasts will also send news regarding emergencies.

Birthdays: Please do not send invitations to be distributed in class for home parties unless ALL students in the class are invited.

Show & Tell: The children may bring something for Show & Tell as part of Student of the Week. Student of the Week will begin after Labor Day and will be on a rotating basis.

* Student of the Week & Accelerated Reader information will be sent home before Labor Day.
