Welcome
to a new year and one that will be filled with lots of hands-on,
minds-on, and critical thinking activities.
Using the textbook, internet, and supporting curricula, your
child will study an overview of physical, earth, and life science.
They will learn to work together to perform experiments and
report results. Throughout
the year we will stay up-to-date with recent developments in science,
including our space program which brings the promise of discovery and
understanding of our universe. Textbooks:
All 5th and 6th grade students will each take a
textbook home. This
textbook will be used all year at home so that your child does not
have to bring a book back and forth to school.
All 5th and 6th grade students have a
classroom set of print textbooks at school for use in the classroom.
The 6th graders can ALSO access their
textbook on line. The site is www.science.glencoe.com.
We are using the Integrated Level Red textbook. User name is RED.
Password is 2UH8t2USWE. Students
with a computer but no Internet can get a book on CD from me.
All students will receive a print textbook; so using the
computer to access the textbook is just another option 6th
graders can take advantage of. Supplies:
The only supplies I have requested specifically for science are
the page protectors. They
are great for organizing materials such as “foldables”, study
guides, thinking maps, lab reports, tests, and small quizzes.
All of these activities will be kept in the binders for each
entire 9-week period. We
will empty and reuse the page protectors at the end of each 9-weeks
period. Lab supplies are
purchased with my allotted budget and donated through wish lists. Tests:
All tests are to be
signed by a parent and returned to school as soon as possible.
Points will be given for tests that are signed and returned
within five days of receiving the test.
This is a very important form of communication so that we can
work together to help your child.
The signed tests are filed in the last page protector of the
science section of the binder. It is important that you encourage your child to keep these
tests here because students will use old tests to study for Unit
Tests. Homework:
All assigned homework is checked for completeness. Points (0
–10) are given based on how much of the assignment was completed. On
the day the assignment is due, correct answers are discussed in class.
The student will have the opportunity to change or amend their
answers as needed in order to have accurate information to help them
study for tests. Make-up
Tests:
Students should plan to make up tests missed due to absence
before or after school. This
is necessary in order for your child not to miss class activities. I will try to work out a time during the school day if
possible. All tests
should be made up within two days of the student’s return to school.
Grading: A variety of assessments are used. The grade for each 9-week period will be determined by calculating a percent of accuracy and completion of the following assessments: ·
Teacher-Selected
Activities -- consist of vocabulary quizzes, lab reports, scoring
rubrics, and chapter tests ·
Homework ·
Unit –
comprehensive test from beginning of each Unit (usually 2 – 3
chapters) Extra
Credit – Educational TV (Science content only) ·
1 point for
every ˝ hour of TV watched ·
Student
writes 4 to 5 things learned from the program on 3 X 5 index card.
Include date and time of program and parent signature. ·
Turn this
in on day of test only for
up to 3 points per test. Science
Fair:
Information will be sent home after Thanksgiving.
In the 5th and 6th grade students may
choose between a science and social studies project. School
website hgschool.org:
