7th Grade Language Arts will include literature (reading), grammar, vocabulary, spelling and writing.

Textbooks:

Grammar – Glencoe (writer’s choice) Grammar and Composition

Literature – Holt (Elements of Literature)

A number of outside resources will be used to supplement the textbooks issued.  Vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension and writing will compose mostly of supplemental resources.

Objectives:

Grammar – The text is designed to include a wealth of options for helping students improve their oral and written language.  Writing skills will also be included.

Literature – To improve the student’s ability to recall, interpret, and apply elements in short stories and poems.  In addition, the student will use analytical and critical thinking skills as it applies to literary work.  Reading comprehension work is included.

Vocabulary and Spelling – To help students expand their vocabulary skills and prepare for standardized tests.

Supplies:

Supplies needed to start the semester:  blue or black ink pen, 5 subject spiral notebook, assignment pad, pocket dictionary.

Classroom Procedures:

1.  Students should enter the room quietly and stand next to their desk for prayer.
2.  Students will sit in assigned seats.
3.  In most cases, the agenda for the class period will be on the board.  Students
     should begin with #1 on the agenda unless otherwise instructed.
4.  Students should refer to Quia for materials needed for a particular day unless
     instructed the day before to bring certain class materials.
5.  Raise your hand to get permission before you speak or get out of your seat.

Discipline:

School rules must be observed at all times.  These consequences will be used for inappropriate behavior.

1.  Verbal warning
2.  (CAP) Corrective Action Plan
3.  Detention
4. Conference with parent
5.  Referred to Disciplinarian

In general, the policy of the student handbook will be followed regarding discipline matters.

Grading:

A variety of assessments will be used.  The grade for each 9-week period will be determined by calculating the percentage of the number of points earned out of the maximum points possible.

Examples of graded work:  classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, and any special report or work assigned by the teacher.

Homework:  Worth 5 points for each assignment checked.  A student who does not have their homework will receive zero out of five points.  Partial credit may be received for part of an assignment turned in on time.  No late homework may be submitted.

Extra-credit:  In general, I do not accept work for extra points.  I believe it is the responsibility of the student to do the work that is assigned on a regular basis.

Grading Scale:   A = 94 - 100
                             B = 86 – 93
                             C = 78 – 85
                             D = 70 – 77
                             F =   0 -  69

Make-up tests:  Tests are usually announced a number of days in advance and are posted on Quia.  If a student is absent for a test, they are responsible for making it up the day they return to school unless they miss material that will be covered on the test.  If that is the case, they should meet with me to determine a time and date to make up the missed test.

Missed quizzes and classwork may or may not be made up.  If these are not made up, as determined by the teacher, it will not have a negative effect on their grade.
